Dirty Pretty Things

The Cornerhouse, Manchester, December 13th 2002

Well, if you kept checking back to read this, I apologise profusely - I just never got around to doing it! Still, nice photo of Audrey, eh?

Though it was December 13th when we went to see it, I still recall now being stunned by quite how brilliant DPT was, and also how compelling. While risking sounding like a stuck record, I can't help mentioning "All or Nothing" in the same breath either, because both deal with the realities of life amongst London's unseen underclasses. But whereas Mike Leigh's film left me not caring less and utterly depressed throughout, Stephen Frears' work provoked a host of reactions - from anger to sadness, frustration to outright laughter and at times utter revulsion.

Outstanding performances from an international cast also help DPT stand-out from the crowd and special mention needs to go to Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays the lead character of Okwe with sensitivity, skill and restraint.

But if you've come here looking for an incisive and well-constructed review of the film, I'd hate to disappoint you, so here's one someone else has done...
